If you were to write a job description for parents, what would you write?
Perhaps you would mention unconditional love and affection, the setting of clear boundaries, being fun and being strict, and maybe, the importance of setting an example.
Some parents don’t like the fact that their children are impressionable and impressed by them, for better or for worse. They don’t like it because it means they have to be held accountable for their behaviour and consider how their behaviour can be interpreted. This applies to everything from smoking cigarettes, to getting blind drunk and starting a fight with your partner, to mouthing off about the woman next door.
It is said that children are like sponges. It is also said that none of us are perfect. With both of these facts in mind, perhaps making a conscious effort to be mindful of our behaviour around children is all we can hope for, in order not just to help ourselves be the best version of ourselves that we can be, but also so that we can help our children be the best they can be.
It doesn’t always have to be about the big things; there are smaller lessons to be taught. The importance of being tidy, of taking care of our space and surroundings and clearing up after ourselves is an essential lesson in life because every child will one day be an adult sharing the space of another; whether it is at school, at home or at work.
You can encourage children to be tidy by making it seem like play for them. Using children’s bookends that are bright and cheerful will make tidying books on the bookcase fun, and collecting them off the floor and putting them back on the shelf rewarding. Children’s bookends will also add colour to their room or nursery.Children’s coat hooks will have a similar effect. They will encourage children to hang up their clothes and tidy their rooms, and infuse them with a sense of responsibility. Who would have thought that children’s coat hooks could be so powerful!
