Using Shelving Correctly
Shelving is the unsung hero of interior décor and can add both functionality and aesthetic value to a room, however, many diy enthusiasts and even professional interior designers do not either understand the value of great shelves, or use their shelves incorrectly – with this in mind, what is the best way to use shelving?

Well the answer to this will depend largely on the specifics of your room, as well as personal taste, however there are a few general rules that should give an idea of how shelves are best used. –      Depending on whether you want to create a functional space, or a space that combines a functional with an aesthetic value, there are ways to get the most out of your shelves.

If you want to create on office space, for example, or space that is geared to reading, then it is often best that shelving is utilized in a utilitarian manner, and therefore packed with books – it is in this functional way that shelves are most frequently used.

However, shelves do not have to be purely functional and by mixing up the content of your shelves, with ornaments, bookends and of course books for example, then you can turn your shelves into bone fide design pieces, that work well in living spaces as well as reading spaces.  – Think of them as a mantelpiece for the 21st century!

As well as stylistic issues, there are also certain practical issues to consider with shelves, and it is crucial that they are strong enough to hold whatever it is your going to put on them, as well as secure enough, securely fitted to the wall etc. – With this in mind, it is a good idea to use high quality materials such as quality woods like pine.
